Overview
Carl Mayes is a Managing Director in Aprio’s Professional Practice Group. In his role, Carl leads the Assurance division of the Professional Practice Group with accountability for audit and assurance quality, where he manages a variety of important processes, such as overseeing the firm’s EQR and QC review functions. Carl also developed and implemented the firm’s audit quality improvement strategy, instituting continuous improvement processes and cultivating a relentless commitment to audit quality among the firm.
Experience
Carl brings a wealth of experience and an exceptional track record in proactively managing risk, pursuing opportunities for improvement, and delivering innovative solutions to improve Aprio’s audit processes. Specializing in audit quality, Carl leads the development of assurance-related policies, guidance and methodology in areas such as group audit, sampling, analytics, internal control and risk assessment, in addition to overseeing assurance consultation function, driving the delivery of expert guidance on complex assurance matters. He also manages Aprio’s internal inspection and conducts root cause analysis, develops responses and tracks remediation plans in response to inspection and AICPA Peer Review findings. Carl holds a strong belief that CPAs have an important role to play in serving the public interest and protecting the integrity of capital markets, a value that drives the work he does.
Education & Affiliations
Carl earned a BS in Accounting from Duquesne University, as well as a Certificate in Leading Professional Service Firms from Oxford University. He was honored to be acknowledged in CPA Practice Advisor’s 40 under 40 in 2022 and was named one of Forbes’ Best-in-State CPAs in 2025. Carl is a member of AICPA and the North Carolina Association of CPA’s. Outside of work, Carl is a dedicated baseball fan, rooting for the Baltimore Orioles no matter where they are in the standings. He enjoys spending time with his family, especially supporting his 3 children in their sporting and drama endeavors. He previously served as the treasurer of Families Moving Forward, a homeless shelter local to him in North Carolina.
